This morning, in my role as Lead Sustainablity Designer and Consultant, I was interviewed on SBS Radio during ‘The German Hour’ program, alongside one of our Building Consultants, Mr Thomas Schirling.
The program is broadcast in German with today’s topic being Sustainable Architecture and Housing.

Sustainable Architecture: Simone Schenkel on SBS Radio
Being invited to speak on SBS with Thomas was a great opportunity to share our strengths in building and sustainability and compare Australian housing energy efficiency with the German standards we were raised in.
Most callers were interested in the costs and benefits associated with double glazed windows so I discussed their benefits from my perspective as an Architect and Energy Rater while Thomas explained how to install double glazed windows properly from a builders perspective.
The most interesting call we received was from a woman who imported double glazed windows from Germany and built a home that met German energy efficiency standards more than twenty years ago. She was proud to say that even in the heights of Summer today – when it’s 40 degrees outside – the house stays cool for days without needing air-conditioning at all!
We concluded the program talking about the energy efficiency benefits of roof and ceiling insulation and thermal efficiency benefits of concrete floors over timber sub-floors.
When the show was over, Oliver Huethe (the producer and host), said that there were so many callers that he will have to line up another show to cover topics that we weren’t able to discuss today.
